Traditional foster care programs protect a child until they are 18 years of age. There are\u00a0many\u00a0ways\u00a0these\u00a0programs\u00a0assist\u00a0young adults.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Education Assistance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Higher levels of education are linked to job stability and increased earnings in adulthood. Programs can walk the\u00a0teen\u00a0through how to apply to college, securing financial aid, and finding a mentor or a tutor. Tuition waivers are available in many states for current and former foster children. Grants and scholarships are also available.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Health Care<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If the youth aging out of foster care\u00a0is on Medicaid, many are eligible to remain on it for health care coverage.\u00a0If they do not meet Medicaid requirements, the Affordable Care Act allows them to purchase coverage on the marketplace\u00a0where premiums are reduced based\u00a0on income levels.\u00a0Resources can also help the youth select a healthcare power of attorney, which is critical if there is no legal guardian to make\u00a0emergency\u00a0decisions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Managing\u00a0Finances<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Starting adulthood with basic financial knowledge is\u00a0vital.\u00a0A curriculum has been developed to help aging\u00a0out foster youth learn financial skills. They\u00a0are educated\u00a0about credit, paying bills, budgeting, banking, saving, investing, and identity protection.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Employment Assistance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Gaining employment can be a critical step for foster youth.\u00a0American Job Centers are located throughout the United States. They are a resource to help foster youth identify training programs, write a resume,\u00a0learn interview skills,\u00a0find\u00a0a job, and more.\u00a0The centers\u00a0can also help the individual understand their\u00a0employee\u00a0rights, which is\u00a0critical at\u00a0any\u00a0age\u00a0or circumstance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Housing\u00a0Assistance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Youth aging out of the foster system are at greater risk of experiencing homelessness. There are both state and federal programs to offer housing assistance for youth exiting foster care. It can come in the form of subsidized housing, vouchers, stipends, or shelters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Once a youth ages out of foster care, extension programs have proven to offer enormous benefits. The individual is more likely to be enrolled in school, receive educational aid, and be more connected to school and work. The likelihood they will\u00a0earn a high school diploma and enroll in post-secondary school increases as well. Longer-term benefits include housing stability and higher chances of employment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A wealth of resources exists to support aging out foster youth in many areas.
